“Hey, fishies. Hi fishies.”

She set her bundle down with a grunt and dangled her fingers in the pond, calling the jewel-toned koi to the surface. Scales shimmered with the same light that glinted off water droplets, kicked airborne by frantic tails.

“Here, fishies. I brought you a treat.” She upended a small bag into the water. The koi circled as a group, scenting the food, then scattered the pieces to disappear into a dozen gaping mouths.

“Do you like it, fishies?” She smiled, looking over her shoulder. The bundle didn’t move, save for the growing pool of blood at the head. “There’s a lot more, if you do.”

  1. Dear Jessica,

Now there is a patient woman. Either that or she’s counting on the koi being very hungry. Well done. I liked your description of the water droplets being kicked aloft by the tails and the way the light glinted on them.

    Aloha,

    Doug

  2. You have an amazing command of the language. I loved every word. Though, if I had to choose, I’d have the second paragraph set to music and listen to the tune all day long.
